
Hundreds of paper lanterns hanging from long poles illuminate the summer night sky at the Akita Kanto Festival that started on Saturday. Male performers acrobatically balance the poles -- some as long as 12 meters and weighing up to 50 kilograms -- on their palms, foreheads, shoulders or backs. A total of 281 poles, made to resemble rice stalks, will be showcased in the four-day festival, which prays for a bountiful harvest and the expelling of bad luck.
