
People parade through the streets alongside ornate floats during the Murakami Taisai grand festival in the city of Murakami, Niigata Prefecture, on Sunday. Three weeks after an earthquake measuring up to upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 hit the area causing severe damage to houses and other buildings, locals participating in the time-honored festival appeared to be full of vigor and determined to promote postdisaster reconstruction.
