Wearing a hairband or a similar hair accessory is one way to add a nice touch of color to an outfit befitting a stylish get-together.

The Isetan Shinjuku department store in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, sells a wide range of hairbands covering the entire palette from soft hues to resplendent colors.

Konomi Sakai, who is in charge of ladies' accessories at the store, said, "Just adding a hairband that has a sense of volume can easily change your image." For people worried about their thinning hair, a hairband also can casually cover those follicly challenged spots.

This winter, the Complex Biz brand has found success with wider hairbands made of stylish velour. These products are priced at 18,000 yen (not including tax). For customers with longer hair, combining this hairband with an elegantly colored barrette (23,000, yen not including tax) that brings melting snow to mind turns a common style into something more glamorous. Tying one's hair back in a bun and adding a bar-shaped hairclip offers a good balance. Hair tends to become dry during the winter months, and dried hair makes one look tired. Using hair cream on hair around the face can bring a look together and fix that problem.

Hair accessory brand acca has this season assembled a range of brightly colored hairbands featuring large bows (25,500, yen not including tax). Depending on the angle at which light hits it, the crystal glass gives off a beautiful radiance. Wire inside the bow allows the wearer to adjust the shape to their own preference. These hairbands are sure to turn heads at any gathering.

At the store of U.S. brand Colette Malouf in the Shin-Marunouchi Building in Tokyo's Marunouchi district, headbands that harness the special qualities of copper wire are the staple products.

The bendable series features wire throughout the headband, enabling it to be bent and shaped as desired.

One headband, which has flower-shaped decorations at both ends, can be worn as a hairband or to fasten hair pulled back and tied behind the head. It can even be worn around the neck like a choker or necklace. This versatile and popular hairband sells for 18,000 yen plus tax.

"It can be adjusted to fit one's head shape," said Fumiko Kawamura, the store's manager.
