'Lifesaving' register of defibrillators launched in SA

An automated electronic defibrillator can send an electric shock to restore the heart's normal rhythm.

A register of defibrillators is being set up in South Australia and it might just save your life.

The SA Ambulance Service wants businesses, community groups and individuals to report automated external defibrillators (AEDs) that are publicly accessible.

When someone calls triple-0 in an emergency, the call taker will then direct them to the nearest AED, day or night.

"Across Australia, the likelihood of surviving an out of hospital cardiac arrest is currently 10 per cent but with increased access to AEDs, alongside the correct use of CPR, we can work to improve this," Health Minister Peter Malinauskas said.

"We are encouraging all South Australian businesses to do their bit by registering their AED to give South Australians the best possible chance of surviving a cardiac emergency."

Jason Killens, from the Ambulance Service, said only 58 per cent of people suffering cardiac arrest were given CPR from a bystander.

"It's important to remember, when you call triple-0 you will always be guided by highly trained emergency call takers at SAAS to help until an ambulance arrives."

"Being able to guide a caller to the nearest AED will make a huge impact on our ability to save lives - the faster an AED is applied alongside CPR, the better outcome for the patient."

The register is being maintained at the SA Ambulance website.

The government said South Australian supermarket chain Foodland had already increased the number of AEDs available in its stores.
