Lifesaving Glasgow workmen track smell of smoke to house fire and alert sleeping occupant

Two Glasgow workmen have been praised after saving a man's life by alerting him about a fire that had taken hold in his home as he slept unawares.

BT Openreach engineers Robert Love and Stephen McQueen were working in the Pollok area when they heard a persistent fire alarm in the distance.

Ex-firefighter Robert couldn’t resist investigating and after trying a few doors they tracked down the one where the smell of smoke was worse.

They then hammered on the door and managed to rouse an occupant, who was asleep in the bedroom upstairs.

Robert, who served with The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) as a crew manager for 25 years, then switched off the electricity and called the fire brigade, and the occupant evacuated the house.

The SFRS confirmed the incident involved a small, smouldering fire in a pile of clothes in an electrics cupboard at the property, and said that if it wasn't for Robert and Stephen's quick-thinking, it could easily have taken hold and ended up a lot worse.

Speaking to Glasgow Live in the wake of the incident, a modest Robert said: "Listen, you like to help out in different circumstances.

"When I heard the smoke alarm and it kept on going after about five or ten minutes I said to Stephen that we were going to have do something. I'm glad we did because we could have saved the guys life, I don't know."

What a pair of legends. We imagine their families and employers are very proud of them.
