Lifelike video reveals what parents can expect at new Welsh medium primary in Swansea

A computer-generated video of what a multi-million pound welsh-medium school will look like has been shared for the first time.

Construction of the £9.9 million new building for Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tan-y-lan will begin this year. There will be a focus on Welsh language provision at the new school, which is expected to open for the Autumn term of 2021.

The primary school will be moving from its current location in Tan-Y-Lan Terrace, Morriston, to Beacons View Road, Clase.

As well as 420 primary-age places there will also be a nursery on site, which will become the first Welsh medium day care facility in Swansea .

The original cost of the project, £7.4 million, rose by £1.4 million because of extra traffic control measures needed around the school as well as necessary retaining wall work.

Other features of the modern new site will be an all-weather sports field and a multi-use games area, which will be made available for public use after school hours.

Swansea Council will contribute £3.1 million to the cost of the project, with the remaining £6.8 million coming from the Welsh Government - which is aiming for there to be a million Welsh speakers in the country by 2050 as part of the 'Cymraeg 2050' programme.

Only three objections to the new Tan-Y-Lan site were submitted during the planning process, citing concerns around parking and traffic.

A 20mph one-way system will be put in place on Hill View Crescent, adjacent to the school, with speed cushions also installed to improve safety outside the school.

Two Welsh language schools are being built in Swansea and will open in 2021. Swansea Council is investing £23 million in YGG Tan-Y-Lan and another Welsh-medium school, YGG Tirdeunaw, which will be moved from its current site in Clase to  Penlan .
