Lifeboat crews rushed to save a man who collapsed on a Donegal beach on Sunday morning.

The dramatic operation happened at Rossnowlagh Beach at around 11am.

The Bundoran RNLI were called in after a passer-by spotted a man had collapsed. Four crew members made their way to the scene aboard a lifeboat.

Shore crew were also dispatched by road to offer assistance to the ambulance crew at the beach.

A landing site was cleared for the Sligo-based Rescue 118 helicopter which arrived a short time later.

The man was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital. His condition is not yet known.

Crew member Brian Gillespie paid special thanks to the passerby who alerted the emergency services.

He said: "This was a great example of inter agency cooperation between the RNLI, Irish Coast Guard and National Ambulance Service.

"We would like to thank the passer-by who initially raised the alarm and we wish the gentleman a speedy recovery."

An RNLI spokesman added that if you see anyone in trouble on the coast ring 999 or 112 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.
