The rescue comes after a horrific weekend on Scotland's waterways after six people lost their lives in incidents across the country.

There has been heartbreak over the tragedies which included the deaths of four youngsters.

A Coastguard spokesman told the Daily Record: "At 3.45pm today, two RNLI lifeboats from Montrose in addition to Arbroath and Dundee Coastguard Rescue Teams, and a fast rescue craft from a nearby vessel, attended Lunan Bay after a report of a number of people in the water.

"All people were recovered safe and well from the water before search and rescue units arrived on scene."

A statement from the Montrose RNLI said people had been on inflatable toys.

It read: "At 1545 today UK Coastguard requested the launch of both Montrose Lifeboat and Montrose ILB.

"Both boats were tasked to Red Castle at Lunan Bay to a number of people seen to be floating out to sea on inflatable toys and dinghy.

"While both boats were enroute, UK Coastguard requested the near by Magne Viking to assist with use of one of their Fast Rescue Craft (FRC).

"The people seen to be floating out managed to self rescue back to the shore and were met by Montrose Coastguard to help and give advice.

"Both Montrose Lifeboat and ILB were stood down shortly after and Magne Vikings FRC returned to its ship.

"Both boats were washed, refueled and made ready."
