Lifeboat crews called to St Mary's Lighthouse to help sick baby on island during high tide

Lifeboat crews were called to help a sick baby on St Mary's Island as the causeway road was cut off during the high tide.

Emergency services were alerted to a baby becoming unwell on the island off the coast of North Tyneside on Tuesday evening.

It was thought the child might need to be evacuated on a boat as the causeway road was impassable at the time.

A number of emergency services were seen near to St Mary's Lighthouse at around 6.30pm.

Tynemouth and Cullercoats RNLI lifeboats were launched as well as the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and the crews headed to the island.

Crew members from Cullercoats station went onto the island to help the casualty but by this time the tide was starting to fall.

An ambulance was then able to make its way over the causeway onto the island and paramedics were then able to take over the baby's treatment.

It is not currently known if the baby was taken to hospital or treated at the scene.
