Lifeboat crew called out to two missing children incidents on Ayr beach

An Ayrshire lifeboat crew were called out yesterday to reports of missing children on Ayr beach.

Troon RNLI raced up the coast to the scene on two separate callouts of a report of a missing child as thousands flocked to the shore to soak up some Bank Holiday sunshine.

The crew were first scrambled to the packed beach at 2.23pm on Monday, May 31 as temperatures soared to the mid-twenties.

Troon RNLI launched their inshore and all-weather lifeboats were launched as part of a search.

A rescue helicopter from Prestwick was also sent to assist the Ayr and Ardrossan Coastguard rescue teams.

Thankfully, while en route to the scene, it was confirmed that the child had been found and both lifeboats returned to Troon.

But less than two hours later at 3.55pm, the volunteer crew were again called out to another report of a missing child at Ayr beach.

Both the RNLI inshore and all-weather lifeboats were once again launched to search alongside the Ayr and Ardrossan Coastguard rescue teams.

Again, while en route the child was located.

Lifeboat chiefs have urged parents to keep a look out on their children when visiting the popular Ayrshire hot spots.

Troon RNLI Lifeboat operations manager Jim Redmond said: "It’s a worry for parents, and the emergency services, when children go missing on the beach. Thankfully both children today turned up a short time later safe and well.

"We are urging parents to keep a close eye on their children when at the beach and to contact the Coastguard via 999 if they do lose sight of their children."
