Life term for man for setting afire mother in Pudukottai village

The Principal District and Sessions Court here on Monday convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man to undergo life imprisonment for murdering his mother by setting her ablaze at Marudhanthalai village in Ilupur taluk in the district in August 2021.

The Court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on D. Santhosh Kumar.  A police press release said Santhosh Kumar poured kerosene over his mother Leelavathy and set her afire after she refused to give him money to retrieve his mortgaged two-wheeler.

The woman succumbed to burns following which the Annavasal police altered it as a case of murder and arrested Santhosh Kumar. The release further said the court had directed that Santhosh Kumar should not be given any relaxation by the government until 40 years during his life imprisonment. It also directed that he should be detained alone in a separate cell for three months for him to reform realising his deed. Following the verdict, Santhosh Kumar was sent to the Central Prison at Tiruchi.
