Life-size gold sculpture showing Kanye West as crucified Jesus is going on sale

A sculpture representing Kanye West as a golden Christ - made by the same artist who created a six-inch wall around Donald Trump ’s walk of fame slab - is to be sold at £21,000.

The piece, entitled False Idol – Kanye West, features the controversial rapper as Jesus during the crucifixion.

The sculpture notably features some diamond chains around his neck, as well as Yeezy sneakers.

False Idol undoubtedly resembles the 44-year-old hip-hop star, as the statue clearly displays Kanye’s prominent facial features.

The life-size fibreglass sculpture has been coated in gold paint and sees the Gold Digger rapper wearing a perizoma - a loincloth said to have been worn by Jesus during his crucifixion.

The artwork named False Idol - Kanye West was created by British anonymous artist Plastic Jesus (Undated handout photo issued by Julien's Auctions of a life-size fibreglass sculpture of Kanye West by artist Plastic Jesus, which is among a collection of contemporary artworks going on sale for the first time. The provocative statue was created by British-anonymous artist Plastic Jesus, who is best known for his thought-provoking pieces.

Now based in sunny Los Angeles, the artist found fame overseas with his six-inch wall, which he placed around Donald Trump’s Hollywood Walk Of Fame star in 2016 - mocking the former president’s wish to build a wall across the Mexican and USA border.

False Idol was created in collaboration with artist Ginger and is among a collection of contemporary artworks going on sale for the first time.

The piece - which made headlines around the world when it was erected in Hollywood before the 2017 Oscars - will be up for sale at the eye-watering price of £21,000.

It will be presented at the Degrees Of Separation exhibition brought on by Auction house Julien’s Beverly Hills and will be sold along with 50 other pieces from some of the most acclaimed stars of contemporary art.

The exhibition, which will take place later this month, will include the works of artists Blek le Rat, Risk and Billy Morrison, and more.

Plastic Jesus’ representation of the Yeezy owner is sure to spark new conversations about the star who is known for his controversial behaviour.

The British street artist uses his creation to address major socio-political and cultural issues, as well as “shining a small light into some of those dark corners of society”.

In a previous interview, Plastic Jesus explained that his False Idol statue was “a comment about how we treat celebrities and the way we idolise them”.

While speaking to HipHollywood he said: “We make them into God-like figures.”

Choosing Kanye for this groundbreaking concept came as a convenient option, as the rapper has been publicly demonstrating his love for his religious beliefs.

The Yeezus rapper started his weekly Sunday Service back in January 2019.

The service presents the performance of an orchestration that includes soul variations of Kanye’s as well as other artists’ songs.

His Sunday Service has been attended by multiple celebrities including the Kardashians, Kid Cudi and more.
