Life on Elswick Road – The street with a rough reputation but 'isn't as bad as it seems'

Known to many outsiders across Newcastle as being 'rough', this Newcastle West End road is really not as bad as it's reputation, according to residents.

Stretching nearly 1,900 metres across the heart of Elswick, this road is no stranger to antisocial behaviour or crime.

So ChornicleLive spoke to residents and local business owners about what life is really like nearby.

As we begin to stroll down the end of Elswick Road, near Benwell, we come across the store Ziba Collections – a clothing shop.

Owner, Saj Khan runs the store with his wife but has experienced some issues working here.

The 42-year-old said: "It's quite rough and we have had some trouble, nothing serious just a few drunk people.

"I wouldn't want to live here and my wife worries when she's working in the store alone.

"There is a lot of rubbish around here as there isn't many bins in this area so I am constantly having to clear the litter away from the front of my store."

Syed Islam, owner of Elswick Local newsagents, who's opinion has changed after starting to work on the road (newcastle chronicle)

It seems that many people perceive this road in a certain way before moving, working and living here.

Syed Islam is new to the area and has recently bought the newsagent Elswick Local.

He says working on the road has completely changed his opinion.

The 40-year-old: "I knew about the lower expectations of this area due to it’s reputation with many people saying that it is quite rough.

"When I first bought the store I didn't know what to expect from people but you get to realise that it's not as bad as it seems.

"If you treat people good they will treat you the same back and you need to give them the benefit of the doubt."

Local resident, Sam Fyfe who has seen an improvement in the area (newcastle chronicle)

Local resident, Sam Fyfe, has grown up in Elswick and has lived on the road for seven years.

Sam has seen an improvement in the area over the years and is proud of Elswick road.

The 26-year-old said: "There has been quite a few new developments here which has helped.

"It's a nice road to be honest. Everyone who grew up together still knows everyone, there is a great community feel.

"There are still a few kids knocking about and hanging around causing trouble but it's like that anywhere. It's definitely not as rough as people think it is."

Local resident Junee Alamar who says there is a great sense of community on the road (newcastle chronicle)

Another resident, Junee Alamar, agrees that the area has a great community spirit.

Moving from the Philippines in September to volunteer in Newcastle, Junee lives just off Elswick Road in Benwell and walks down the road every day.

The 31-year-old said: "It's such a peaceful road to walk along. I even walk along it 3am when I'm going on trips away and I never feel scared or threatened.

"When you are walking down the street if you smile at someone you will always get a smile back."
