Life inside the toll booths at the Mersey tunnels from live crabs to old coins

From live crabs in the coin machines to dads rushing to get to the births of their children, there's never a boring day for Merseytravel staff.

Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, the tunnels rely on a legion of dedicated staff to keep them running smoothly.

Serving around 27 million vehicles a year, equating to around 75,000 a day, staff say it's never dull working at the booths.

We spoke to team Leader Shaun Wilson at the Queensway Tunnel in Birkenhead who said staff members need to have the "right attitude" for the job.

He told the ECHO there's never a boring day in his line of work as he has seen plenty of unusual and wonderful scenes unfold in front of him.

From famous faces to the average Joe, Shaun said you just never know what you will be faced with.

He added: "The best part about the job is definitely the customers.

"We also get to see celebrities all the time. Paul Hollywood comes through when he's filming on this side along with Greg Wallace from Masterchef.

"My favourite has got to be Stuart McCracken from Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away! I watch those programmes quite often and one day I was sat in the toll both when he came through.

"I think they just wanted to get through without stopping to chat but I gave them a good smile.

"One thing that happened quite recently was one of the systems engineers had to open up one of the lanes and found a live crab inside of the automated coin machine.

"The live crab was just sitting on the disc that collects the money. I said 'we only take cash payments, we don't take crab payments here'.

"You see a lot of £5 notes when you open the machine and wonder how people got through. We also see a lot of people who arrive here lost, especially at Queensway as it can be quite misleading.

"We get people coming through the tunnel by mistake and then turning around but ending back at the tunnel because they got lost. We have a joke and tell them we will see them again in five minutes because they just keep coming around and around.

"You've definitely got to have banter here, it makes the day go by a lot quicker and funnier.

"You get the odd person trying to pay with a sweet and you've got to haggle them to get a payment. When I first started I had people give me old £2 coins thinking it was real but I was told it's not legal and we couldn't take them.

"But then I'd forget and keep taking them so people were palming me off with out of date coins.

"It's all in good banter."

As well as the weird and quirky stories, toll booth staff are often faced with serious reasons for people needing to get through the plaza as quickly as possible - including expectant parents rushing to the birth of their children.

Shaun said he has seen many people rushing to their hospital appointments including one dad whose new-born baby was due to arrive any minute and had to get to his destination as soon as possible.

As well as seeing through thousands of cars every day, staff at Merseytravel also play their part in helping out various charity events.

Shaun said: "It's great seeing a host of charity events here at the tunnel. Every year we have the Tunnel 10k which sees people running through the Kingsway Tunnel and you can cheer them all on or you see the bikers coming through in the Liverpool to Chester bike ride.

"The best one is the Liverpool city taxi drivers when they do an outing every year for disadvantaged children and you see them coming through beeping their horns with balloons and the children are all made up waving at you.

"These are the massive perks of the job. That and your average customer who tries to give you crisps, sweets and chocolates.

"Staff form bonds with customers and they often come in the lanes just to see a toll officer and have a chat with them, it's wonderful.

"We get party buses coming through as well which is always fun. They are all in the bus cheering you on and it gives you a lot of entertainment so you cheer back at them."

However, Shaun said despite the many perks, there is one minor downside to working on the Tunnel booths for eight hours a shift.

He said: "The worst part is the working outside in the cold weather. But we do have heaters in the toll so we can jump in if it gets too cold and warm up or we will rotate staff around so no-one is ever left outside for too long.

"But it is great. Our job is to get people through quickly and safely and with a smile. You'll always get that off me at least.

"We've seen all sorts here. A lot of movies being filmed. We've had Harry Potter, Fast and Furious and most recently we've had Hollyoaks."

Shaun's partner Jenny Duckers also is a team leader for the Mersey tunnels.

He said: "We both started as CSO's and were both promoted to team leaders. But before that we worked in a pub together so we've worked together for around 14 years.

"We are the power couple of the tunnels and we live together too.

"We get a long like a house on fire, so whereas other people may need to take that break, we don't. We are like the best of friends and when we get home there's always something to talk about when we get home."
