Life in Woodthorpe which is lovely, quiet and filled with trees

In the quiet suburb of Woodthorpe, not too far from both Arnold and Sherwood, people have spoken about what it is like to live in the area. Residents have described the location as "lovely" and "filled with trees".

Woodthorpe has a population of approximately 6,124 people. According to one resident, it is the "perfect place" to live when you have retired.

Doretta Lee, 67, who has been a resident of Woodthorpe for 20 years, said: "It's quiet and calm. The only noise I hear is traffic on the roads but it could be worse.

"It's the perfect place to live when you're retired. The buses are great - I use them daily and there's a newsagent near the light shop, the lady in there is always happy."

Doretta added: "I'd love to see a cafe in the area. I know there's the pub but I'd quite fancy a quiet cafe too."

Earl Winter, 87, said: "Woodthorpe is lovely and quiet, not much happens around here. I like going to the Vale for a drink or I take my scooter to Arnold."

Earl, who is now retired, added: "Sherwood, Arnold, Daybrook and Woodthorpe are all close together. Not everyone can tell the difference depending on where you are but Woodthorpe is a small area - if you don't know someone you probably know their face."

There are a number of businesses in Woodthorpe - one of the newer ones is the Sea and Earth chip shop which opened in 2021. Self-employed Julia Reece, 32, has lived in the area since 2019.

She said: "I love taking my dog for walks in Woodthorpe Park. Jerk Kitchen has lovely food - I've been there plenty of times and Sherwood is about a 15-minute walk as well.

"Nothing really goes on in Woodthorpe but that's a good thing. I always wanted to live somewhere filled with trees and in close proximity to anything you'd need."

On Ribblesdale Road, you’ll find Elara Handmade Gift Shop. The shop, classed as Sherwood, is seconds away from Woodthorpe. Ela Pouri is the owner of the gift shop and art gallery.

Many of her customers live in Woodthorpe. Ela said: "The area is good. Every day people come and visit. The area's quiet."

Ela's bestsellers with her customers are cushions and art. She added: "We've been here for just over a year and everything's handmade."

When buying the decor for her art gallery, Ela went to Sherwood Lighting UK on Mansfield Road, which is also seconds away from a Woodthorpe postcode. Eddie Perry, 76, lives in Sherwood.

Now retired, he said: "Even though I live in Sherwood, to me, it's more Woodthorpe. Woodthorpe is one of those places where other people drive to but don't go to that often. The area is peaceful and if you want more noise, there’s always Sherwood and Arnold to go to."
