Life in Nottinghamshire village where it's 'impossible' to buy houses due to demand

People living and working in one of the most 'picturesque' villages in Nottinghamshire have said it is impossible to buy a house there, and could not speak more highly of where they live. According to hotels.com, a website for booking hotels online and over the phone, Papplewick is among the best looking villages in the county.

The website states it's rated so highly because of its charm, Victorian waterworks (Papplewick Pumping Station), Papplewick Hall and its array of flowers through the village. And locals say because it is so lovely there, it's impossible to move into the village.

Looking on online estate agent sights Rightmove and Zoopla confirms this, as there is just one property up for sale in Papplewick at the time of writing, on Moor Lane coming into the village. One of the pub managers at Griffins Head on Moor Road explains why she thinks this is the case.

Heather Roskell, 33, said: "The only time you'd ever really see houses for sale around here is if people are downsizing. It's very hard to buy and come back to the village if you want to, and it's very expensive too.

"With it being so close to Newstead Abbey, people park up, come back from there and have a well-earned pint here. There is so much walking around here and there is a real-close knit community too, everyone knows each other."

Robin Rhodes, 56, the chairman of Papplewick & Cricket Club, agrees that it's difficult to move into the area. He lives on A60 Mansfield Road, which is still classed as part of Papplewick.

Papplewick is one of the most picturesque villages in the county, according to hotels.com (Nottingham Post/Marie Wilson)

He said: "It's a very exclusive area, houses do not come up around here often and when they do come up, they go really quickly. It's a testament to how beautiful it is here. It's just a beautiful place to live, it's so lovely and pretty.

"It's only seven miles or so away from the city, but it feels like it could be 70. I've been involved with the cricket club for more than 40 years since I started playing when I was 13, and our little bit is lovely.

"If you do know about the club, it's a lovely little secret, we're very proud of it. We try to give opportunities to as many people as possible here, we had 115 kids playing on Friday (May 13) night here as part of an ECB initiative."

Amanda Sherwin, 55, has just one complaint about living in Papplewick (Nottingham Post/Marie Wilson)

A tea room owner in the village only has one complaint about Papplewick - and that's traffic on the roads in the area.

Amanda Sherwin, 55, owner of Morton's Farm Tea Rooms on Main Street, said: "I've lived here for 25 years and it's a nice little village. The roads are far too busy, as the main road can be used as a bit of a rat run.

"But children growing up here have always been at the heart of the community, and we've never had any problems, everyone has always been lovely. It's very pretty here as well with a lot of buildings being Grade II listed, it's comfortable living here too.

"It's so nice to be able to say hello to people. We've had people visit us here from Australia and South Africa, and people have travelled from Devon as well."
