'Life and soul of the village' collapsed and died after an afternoon drinking

A plasterer described as the "life and soul of the village" died after collapsing following a visit to a pub where he was a regular.

Neville Davies, who was known as 'Budgie', had visited the Incline Inn in Ponthenri, Carmarthenshire, on June 21 last year to visit the landlord who was a personal friend.

The pub was shut to the public, but by the evening after having a few drinks the 30-year-old collapsed. An ambulance was called and paramedics carried out CPR before he was taken to Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen where he placed in the intensive care unit, but hours later he was declared dead.

Friends and family said he was well known and well liked in the Gwendraeth Valley, and had earned his nickname because he would always walk with his "head in the sky".

An inquest at Llanelli Town Hall into his death heard how 'Budgie' was well regarded as a plasterer in the area due to the standard of his work, and he would work long hours, being both "hard working and hard drinking".

Described as a "character", the inquest also heard how he loved to travel and would visit Thailand up to three or four times a year.

A postmortem found his level of alcohol was 304 mg in 100 ml of blood - the drink drive limit is 80 mg.

It concluded the cause of death was cardiorespiratory depression, with elevated alcohol levels, and a fatty liver.

The inquest heard there was no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death or third party involvement.

Senior coroner for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Paul Bennett said: "Mr Davies had a hard working life and a hard drinking existence too, which was clearly evidenced by the findings of the postmortem, with elevated levels of alcohol and finding of a fatty liver.

"It is very sad when someone who was clearly such a hard worker ended his life in such circumstances, and I convey my condolences to the family".

Mr Bennett recorded a conclusion of an alcohol-related death.
