Lidl unveils new peated blended malt whisky for under £16

Whisky fans can now grab the latest peated release from Lidl for under £16 after the popular supermarket firm announced the launch of a new blended malt from their award-winning whisky range.

The new Highlands & Speyside blended Scotch malt, Abrachan, will join the chain's existing range which includes the Queen Margot blend and Ben Bracken single malt whiskies.

Described as being "packed with flavour", the new Abrachan has hints of "smoked sea salt, beach bonfires and caramelised sugar".

Priced at just £15.99 for a 70cl bottle, the new release is available to buy now at all Lidl Scotland stores.

The Lidl team say that the new dram is the "ultimate multi-tasking" pour, and goes down well served neat, on the rocks or in a classic whisky sour.

The name for the new whisky is said to have been inspired by Scottish folklore, with the Abrachan being a mythical beast who roamed the Highlands and Lowlands.

Its fiery breath is said to have "smouldered the land", making it the ideal naming choice for such a rich and smoky whisky.

Whisky expert and writer Blair Bowman, who got to try the new offering out, describes it as "an excellent introduction to whisky for new dram explorers".

He said: “Its notes of warm vanilla and spiced finish are a nod to its Highlands and Speyside origins.

"A delicious and moreish blended malt with a lovely balance of sweetness and smokiness”.

Paul McQuade, head of buying spirits at Lidl GB, believes it is one of their most exciting additions yet, he added: "We worked hard to create a blended malt that welcomes new whisky drinkers and connoisseurs alike with something a little different.

"Its unusual bottle, incredible flavour and great price make it a standout dram.

“Bringing a blended malt whisky to our shelves at such great value is testament to our commitment to offering premium Scottish products to our shoppers at unbeatable prices.”

Tasting notes from whisky expert Blair Bowman:

Nose: An inviting sweet smoke with rich vanilla fudge and warm sooty notes. Opens up into a smoked crème brûlée with a spiced caramelised sugar top.

Sweet citrus peels, caramelised orange and lemon peel, mixed with sweet and spicy nutty notes, honey roasted cashews and almonds with cracked black pepper. Smoked sea salt and smoulder beach bonfire made of salty driftwood come later.

Palate: A warming feel with more vanilla fudge and crème brûlée and spiced caramelised sugar, hints of clove, cinnamon and cardamom. Sweet and delicate heathery smoke lingers and mingles with citrus peels and honey roasted nuts.

S’mores toasted over a smoky beach bonfire made with milk chocolate covered cherry marshmallows and biscoff biscuits. Later, more peppery and smoked sea salt notes.

Finish: Medium finish with sweet and spicy smoke.
