Lidl to sell 5kg boxes of fruits and vegetables for just £1.50

Budget supermarket Lidl has announced that 5kg boxes of fruits and vegetables priced at just £1.50 have been rolled out to every UK store, in an effort to reduce food waste.

The retail giant's 'Too Good To Waste' initiative was launched in August in 122 stores, and had been met with such enthusiasm that it has now been rolled out across the nation.

The boxes consist of a huge 5kg of food from the store shelves which have become slightly damaged, discoloured, or deteriorated, but are still perfectly good to eat.

They are put together by the store's on-site 'freshness specialists' and will be available to customers from opening to midday each day.

If there are any of the bargain boxes left after 12pm, they will be given to good cause through Lidl’s surplus food redistribution programme Feed it Back.

Different from ‘wonky veg’ boxes, sold by other supermarkets, the initiative is designed to reduce fruit and veg waste in store.

Instead of pricing down produce which is considered irregular, Lidl aims to work closely with suppliers to ensure a degree of flexibility with specifications at different times of the year, to allow the inclusion of items within its standard product lines.

CEO of Lidl GB Christian Härtnagel said: “The positive feedback that we have received off the back of our trial has been incredible; from our colleagues who are showing so much passion for them, to our customers who were getting in touch from the get go asking where they could get one.

"We’re therefore really excited to be rolling the boxes out to all of our stores nationwide, and we’re really pleased to see that it’s also starting to be adopted by other supermarkets."
