Lidl to open new stores in Scotland as 220 jobs created

Budget s upermarket giant Lidl has announced today it will create 220 new jobs in Scotland.

The roles will be created over the next 12 months at four new stores and existing outlets across the country.

Bosses of the German firm have vowed to open new premises despite disruption amid the coronavirus pandemic.

New stores are planned for Rosyth, Finnieston and Robroyston - adding to the firm's 103 Scottish sites.

Ross Millar, Lidl’s Regional Director for Scotland, said: “At the beginning of 2020 we opened our 100th store in Scotland.

"To be able to continue that growth across the country is an exciting prospect and reinforces our commitment to creating new jobs and providing Scottish communities with quality produce at Lidl value prices.”

New roles will be created at existing stores including Kirkwall, Kelso and Kilsyth.

The retailer recently revealed a list of 28 'sites of interest' across the country.

Bosses have already created 170 new jobs since January.

Millar said workers will be paid £9.30 per hour, a rate above the government’s National Living Wage and one of the highest in the supermarket sector.

He added: "The supermarket is passionate about sourcing local produce, and currently stocks over 400 products from over 60 suppliers across Scotland, ranging from quality fruit and vegetables, to dairy and bakery lines."
