Lidl to open huge new Edinburgh store as plans are approved by council

A huge new Lidl store is set to open in Edinburgh after plans were approved by the council.

The discount supermarket had applied to turn the old Currys PC World store in Corstorphine into a new shop, with plans given the green light this week.

A whole host of work is to be carried out on the huge retail unit, as Lidl gets ready to occupy the mezzanine level of the building.

Works will include a reconfigured entrance, new shopfront windows and glazing, increased doors, a new canopy and an access lift.

Plans have been ongoing for some, with the supermarket submitting detailed drawings on how the building will be transformed.

Located next to a McDonalds and a Pets at Home store, the supermarket is likely to draw increased customers to the retail park, which is also next to a Tesco superstore.

It comes as the lease held by Currys PC World is due to expire next year, with developers hoping to give the building a new purpose as soon as possible.

In the last year, Lidl has opened a number of stores in Edinburgh and the Lothians as demand for their discount groceries increases.

In October, the company revamped and reopened its site in Granton, after expanding into the old Iceland unit next door.

Currently, it has not been confirmed when the new site at Corstorphine is due to open.
