Lidl to give vouchers to customers who return plastic bottles and cans

Lidl is to become the first supermarket in the country to offer customers vouchers if they return plastic bottles and cans to the store.

The scheme will launch in Lidl Glenageary and be rolled out nationally by the end of 2023.

This comes as the Government is set to announce plans for a national deposit return scheme which is to be introduced next year as a way to increase recycling and reduce litter.

For every can/bottle that a customer returns, a voucher of 10c will be given to be used in the store, up to a maximum of €2.

As many as 17,000 cans can be deposited at a single machine in a week.

There are currently 170 Lidl stores in Ireland with the German retailer hoping to have one machine in all stores by 2023.

Lidl believes these machines will allow for 1,500 tonnes of plastic to be reused for other products, every year.

Minister for the Environment, Eamon Ryan, has been pushing for the introduction of a deposit return scheme as a way to change people's attitudes to rubbish.

Lidl has set ambitious targets for reducing its carbon footprint. These efforts include the planting of over 80,000 native trees which will help absorb more than 12,500 tonnes of carbon.

The German retailer boosted its biodiversity with the rollout of 20 pollinator-friendly stores across Ireland.
