Lidl target a new store in Helensburgh - with Aldi also keen on opening in town

Lidl are targeting a new store in Helensburgh — just after a week after budget rival Aldi revealed their plans to open in the town.

The German giant has announced plans to open dozens of new stores in Scotland as part of an expansion drive that will also pave the way for hundreds of extra jobs, as they aim to open 1000 stores across the UK by 2022.

It said £1.3bn will be invested into the project, which includes opening 50 new stores over the next 12 months in the UK overall.

In total, the budget supermarket says it wants to open 20 in Scotland, including one in Helensburgh, with new stores featuring solar panels and electric vehicle charging points.

Last week, rival chain Aldi revealed their intentions to open stores in Helensburgh and Dumbarton, as both brands continue to grow.

If Lidl push forward with the Helensburgh development it would become the town’s second new supermarket, with Morrisons taking over the former Waitrose store on Cardross Road last year.

Lidl also opened a new store on Castle Street in Dumbarton in February 2020.
