Lidl has silenced claims its well-loved croissants "aren't vegetarian" after a false WhatsApp rumour.
The message has been making the rounds on the messaging app claiming that the product is actually made with lard, meaning it wouldn't be suitable for vegetarians.
The initial news caused an uproar on social media, with some saying the "world is ruined".
One Twitter user said: "@LidlGB someone forward me regarding croissants at Lidl containing lard instead of butter. And the ingredients says 'not suitable for vegetarian'. How true is that??"
Another wrote: "@LidlGB is this true someone sent me a forward regarding croissants at Lidl containing lard (pork fat) instead of butter".
Despite the false claims, Lidl's official Twitter page had to work overtime to let people know the message was completely false.
A Lidl Twitter representative said: "Hi there, I can confirm that the Lidl All Butter Croissants do not contain lard and are suitable for vegetarians!"
The ingredients include wheat flour, butter made from milk, water, yeast, sugar, whole milk powder, liquid egg (from barn eggs), wheat gluten, salt, emulsifier, (fatty acids which are plant based) and wheat starch.
The same rumour spread in 2018 where many Muslims were outraged after claims the croissants wasn't haram. A Lidl spokesperson told BuzzFeed the claims made in the video "are largely incorrect and misleading".
Lidl has been reached for a comment.
