Lidl shopper tells RTE's Joe Duffy how vacuum caught fire and filled room with smoke 'in seconds'

A Joe Duffy caller has warned others of the danger of cordless vacuums after his hoover exploded in flames.

Niall O’Gorman went on air on RTÉ’s Liveline with Joe Duffy today and said his vacuum cleaner went on fire on Saturday night. He said the flames filled the room with smoke “in seconds.”

The SilverCrest Handheld Vacuum was purchased in Lidl and was plugged in and charging when it exploded.

Luckily, Niall was quick enough with his fire extinguisher to quell the flames, but not before the machine had caused fire and smoke damage.

Apparently, Lidl recalled the hoover in September but Niall says he was completely unaware of the recall and the danger he had lurking in his home.

Niall says Lidl sold “2,204 (of the vacuums) in the Republic of Ireland,” but neither he nor Joe could find out how many they received back after the recall.

Niall says the hoover is a “silent killer.”

“If I wasn’t there, if there weren't smoke alarms, there was no extinguisher, can you imagine if this went off in someone’s house without it?”

Joe made the point that many people leave their cordless hoovers charging overnight and described the danger it could pose if a fire started when unaware vacuum owners were sleeping.

“It’s a killer in the house, ready to go off,” Niall warns. Consumers who have purchased the vacuum should return the product to a Lidl store for a full refund.
