Lidl shopper accused of shoplifting tries to run over staff member in her Jaguar

A woman tried to run over a supermarket worker after being accused of shoplifting in Leigh.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the Jaguar driver then told another customer that she had Covid-19, before spitting at them.

Officers were called to the incident at Lidl, in Bridge Street, Golborne, just before 10.30am today (Friday September 18).

Police have not confirmed if any arrests have been made at this time.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police were called just before 10.30am to a report that a woman had been challenged by staff after being suspected of shoplifting at a store on Bridge Street, Golborne.

"The woman made off in her car – a silver Jaguar – and attempted to run over a member of staff before spitting at another customer after claiming she had COVID-19."

A spokesman for Lidl added: "We can confirm that police were alerted to an incident at our Bridge Street store in Golborne, as a result of violent and abusive behaviour towards colleagues and customers.

"Our teams are working exceptionally hard under challenging circumstances to maintain a safe store environment for our customers, and under no circumstances do we tolerate behaviour of this nature.

"We will continue to support the police and provide any further assistance needed."
