Lidl shop windows smashed after bricks were thrown during opening hours

Shoppers have vented their frustration at an act of 'mindless destruction' after two windows of a supermarket were damaged by bricks.

Police are now making inquiries after reports a man threw the objects at Lidl in Mansfield Road, Carrington, on Saturday afternoon, June 27. Images taken at the scene on Monday morning (June 29) show the windows cracked because of the impact.

The large windows are directly in front of the till area where staff and customers are present throughout the day and are visible to passers-by and those queuing outside.

After reports appeared on Facebook people described the incident as "awful", "despicable" and "mindless destruction".

Supermarkets have been one of the only forms of business to have remained open throughout lockdown, with staff having to work around stock shortages, new protective measures and managing the flow of shoppers.

David White, 50, of Bestwood Lodge, said it made him feel as though "no one has respect".

"It just seems to be happening more now as lockdown eases, this kind of behaviour," the father-of-two said.

"I'm seeing the news reports across the county and in other areas and it feels like no one has respect anymore.

"We spent months supporting our services, clapping for key workers, and now this. How have people got time to be smashing windows?

"I really feel for the staff and what they must be having to deal with or thinking about."

David Harris, of Carrington, echoed the feeling, stating the easing of lockdown may be the cause of the return of "mindless vandalism".

The 79 year old said: "I wasn't around when it happened but my wife let me know. I do shop here around twice a week.

"Unfortunately, these things do happen around here occasionally.

"It seems like mindless vandalism, maybe someone was angry. I think we could see more as lockdown eases."

Police are now appealing for information on the incident as investigations continue.

Sergeant Nick Wealthall, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Officers were called to a report of criminal damage at the Lidl supermarket in Mansfield Road, Carrington, which happened around 4.05pm on Saturday, June 27.

"It was reported that a man had thrown bricks at two windows, causing them to smash.

"Our enquiries are ongoing, including checking CCTV footage, and we're urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information about those responsible for the damage, to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 574 of 27 June 2020, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A spokeswoman for Lidl said: "We can confirm that on Saturday, June 27 police were called following an incident at our Mansfield Road store and we are supporting them in their investigation. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the store is trading as normal."
