Lidl set to open new supermarket on site of old Poundstretcher in Penllergaer

A multi-million pound new supermarket is set to be built in Swansea, on the site of a former bargain store.

Lidl has announced plans to create a new store on Gorseinon Road in Penllergaer - on the site of the former Poundstretcher, subject to planning permission from Swansea Council.

If approved, the store would replace its existing unit which is currently on the same road, and create around 10 new full and part time jobs, as well as retaining all the existing employees from the current store.

The supermarket would have an in store bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Paul Hebblethwaite, said: “We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening a new and improved supermarket in Penllergaer, which will allow for a larger, modern and enhanced shopping experience for local residents, whilst delivering a greater range of our high quality and affordable produce.

“Our plans are set to create around 10 additional jobs, which will be fantastic for the local area, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to join us for the 'virtual' public consultation. We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”

The new store forms part of the company’s £1.3 billion investment plans across Great Britain in 2021 and 2022.

Lidl is inviting the public to comment on proposals by clicking here. The deadline is midnight on Monday, February 22.
