Lidl secures planning permission to begin demolition work at new Airdrie store

Demolition work is now underway on the site of a new Lidl store in Airdrie.

The supermarket chain has taken the first steps towards constructing the Carlisle Road shop after permission was granted by planning officers at North Lanarkshire Council.

The Airdrie store's creation, at the warehouse site occupied by Distell International and formerly Burn Stewart, marks a milestone in the retailer’s continued investment in North Lanarkshire which, alongside another site in Bellshill currently being built, represent a multi-million pound investment for the area and will create around 80 jobs for the local economy.

This follows the opening of Lidl’s largest Regional Distribution Centre in Motherwell in 2019, showcasing the retailer’s continued commitment to investing in North Lanarkshire.

The new store in Airdrie will have solar panels installed on the roof, as well as rapid electric vehicle charging points in the car park. With a 1255m² sales area, the site will feature facilities including an in-store bakery and customer toilets with baby changing.

It will also have money-back recycling stations installed, in preparation for the Scottish Government’s Deposit Return Scheme rollout in July 2022.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Gordon Rafferty, told Lanarkshire Live : “We’re very excited to commence demolition works at our new Airdrie site.

"This marks another important milestone in our ongoing investment in the area as we further grow our foothold in North Lanarkshire.”
