Lidl's lovely gesture after death of Ashling Murphy as Ireland pays tribute at vigils

Lidl has announced that both of its stores in Tullamore will be closed from 4pm until 5pm on Friday while a vigil takes place for Ashling Murphy.

The supermarket said the move was "out of respect for Ashling Murphy, her family and the vigil planned in the town" and thanked their customers for understanding.

The 23-year-old primary school teacher died after being attacked while jogging along the canal in Tullamore at around 4pm on Wednesday.

Gardai are continuing to hunt for her killer after a man who was initially arrested was released and ruled out of inquiries on Thursday night.

The murder has sent shockwaves throughout communities nationwide, with vigils planned across the country for people to pay their respects to the talented musician.

Large numbers are expected to attend the vigil in Tullamore at 4pm on Friday.

Lidl explained their decision to close their stores in the town for that hour, writing on Twitter: “We will be closing both of our stores in Tullamore from 4pm - 5pm today out of respect for Ashling Murphy, her family and the vigil planned in the town.

“Our deepest condolences to the family and we thank our customers for understanding.”

The move has been, with one person replying: “Well done, lovely sign of respect.”

Another added: “I hope other stores there will follow suit.”

With Ashling’s killer still at large, gardai renewed their appeal for information on Friday morning.

One focal point of the probe is a Falcon Storm mountain bike, while anyone in the Cappincur/Canal walk area of Tullamore at around 4pm on Wednesday asked to come forward.

Officers are appealing for information on the bike which has straight handlebars and distinctive yellow/ green front forks.

Gardai also continue to appeal for anyone who can help them with their investigation and who may not already have spoken to members of the force to come forward with that information.

They have pledged that "no stone will go unturned" in seeking the perpetrator of the horrific act and bringing them to justice.

More than 50 officers are involved in the probe, while an incident room at Tullamore Garda Station has been established.
