Lidl's controversial new checkout system leaves shoppers furious

Lidl is bringing in new technology to its checkout system across stores.

The budget supermarket giant announced it is launching new scan-as-you-shop tech - but some shoppers aren't happy about the system.

The new technology, which is already used in Tesco and Sainsbury's, allows customers to scan and pay for items using their smartphones.

Lidl Go - as the new system is being called - will is currently being trialled before it will launch nationwide, including in Scotland, if successful

Customers can use the handy smartphone app to use it to scan barcodes as they shop, with barcodes at weighing stations for unlabelled fruit and vegetables.

Lidl will make shoppers pay at the tills using a “barcode generated by the app”, while Tesco and Sainsbury's allow you to avoid the checkouts altogether.

But the new smartphone technology has disgruntled some shoppers, who complained it would stop the elderly from being able to shop.

One wrote: "No thanks. Prefer speaking to humans."

"Also potentially great for digitally analysing shopper behaviour in store and blending with other govt. campaigns no doubt." a second moaned.

A third complained: "Great now we're supposed to do their work for them. Hope they don't expect us to restock the shelves and clean up spills.."

Another commented: "Great way to leave out the elderly who don't have smartphones."
