Lidl reaches milestone 800th store with Scottish opening

Lidl has reached a significant milestone in Scotland by opening its 800th UK store.

The opening of the supermarket chain's new store in Dumbarton saw them hit the landmark number. It is one of four new stores Lidl is opening across the UK today, with London, Boston and Cambridge being the others.

The Dumbarton store is also Lidl's 101st in Scotland, and has created 40 new jobs for the local area.

It comes as part of the chain's rapid expansion, with 16 new UK stores being opened in 2020 already. Lidl are looking to reach 1,000 stores by the end of 2023.

Lidl GB Chief Executive Officer Christian Härtnagel said: “We’re excited to have reached this milestone, which simply means that we’re bringing affordable, high quality food to even more households across Britain.

"I’m proud of our fantastic teams, from our colleagues working on the shop floor to our colleagues in the warehouse and across our offices, who have driven our expansion efforts around the country. We’re looking forward to opening our doors to even more communities this year and into this new decade where we see so much potential for further growth.”

The most recent set of Kantar data shows that the supermarket is the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK, with gross sales growing 11.1% year-on-year for the 12 weeks to January 26.
