Lidl plans major expansion of its South Wales distribution centre

Supermarket giant Lidl has confirmed major expansion plans for its regional distribution centre in Bridgend.

It comes after the German-owned business acquired land for expansion next to its existing centre, which extends to 320,000 sq ft.

The land deal will allow Lidl to extend the operation by a further 70,000 sq ft.

It said the expansion would see new jobs created, but at this stage couldn't give an exact number.

The existing centre employs 233 and serves the supermarket's growing network of stores in Wales, which currently number 58.

Lidl said it was too early to say when the extension, subject to planning consent, would happen.

Simon Hedderman, regional director at Lidl GB, said: "We first opened our warehouse in Bridgend in 2004, servicing Lidl stores across Wales.

"In this time we have experienced considerable growth, with more customers shopping in our stores than ever before.

The expansion of our Bridgend distribution centre will ensure that we are able to provide continued support to our current store network in Wales, whilst paving the way for future growth.”

Bridgend is one of 13 Lidl distribution centres operating across England, Scotland and Wales.
