Lidl planning to launch online delivery service that will let you shop from home

Lidl customers could soon be able to shop from home as the supermarket giant looks into launching an online delivery service.

While shoppers in Italy can avail of same-day delivery, British customers are only able to shop in store.

Lidl has grown to 22,000 employees, 760 branches and 13 distribution centres in England, Scotland and Wales since it launched in the 1990s.

But a key issue among its fanbase, which is rapidly increasing, is the lack of being able to place new orders online.

Currently its website only provides information about what it has in stock but customers are unable to purchase goods.

But that all looks set to change after the budget supermarket started recruiting for a new " digital project manager ".

The new position will "identify new business opportunities to drive revenue" as well as "contribute not only to individual projects but also to the ongoing formation and success of other functional areas".

"You will be instrumental in helping to deliver a new online platform with the aim of acquiring new customers and driving online sales," the ad reads.

It's not conclusive proof - as the role could simply be to work on the existing site, but coming after bosses recently told The Grocer they were "actively exploring" the idea of launching online shopping, it could be telling.

Lidl told Mirror Money : "We have a digital department already established within the business and, of course, online is something we're looking at.

"We will provide further information if and when we have any developments to announce."

It comes three years after rival Aldi opened its first UK online store - initially offering cases of wine only.

Since then, it's gone on to include a lot of its special buys, as well as homeware and leisure goods.
