Lidl plan store expansion into Iceland unit - but frozen food retailer won't be pushed out yet

Supermarket giant Lidl wants to expand one of its Welsh stores with an extension into an Iceland unit next door.

The German discounter has revealed plans to extend its Aberystwyth supermarket.

But Deeside based Iceland Foods said it had its lease until 2021 at the Rheidol Retail Park and can't be removed without their consent.

They are though looking for alternative locations in the Mid-Wales town.

Lidl owns the freehold on the retail park.

The company said it was exploring various options to improve its offering in Aberystwyth.

They said any expansion would create additional jobs at the store.

A spokesman for Iceland said: "We were aware of Lidl's intention to expand their Aberystwyth store, though we were not aware that they had actually lodged a planning application.

"The lease on our own store at Rheidol Retail Park has a further two years to run, until September 2021, and we cannot be removed from the park before then without our consent.

"We are already looking at alternative premises in Aberystwyth to which we can relocate as and when we do decide to move."
