Lidl opening supermarket in Bristol city centre

Lidl has confirmed it is opening a new supermarket in Bristol city centre.

The German retailer will launch the store in place of H&M in Union Street, which has closed permanently.

Lidl has more than 10 branches in the city already, but this will be its first in the centre.

It was announced in August that Lidl had plans to build a new supermarket in place of the outgoing shop, after a notice for a premises licence application appeared outside.

And the company has now confirmed it has secured permission from Bristol City Council to go ahead with its plans.

A Lidl spokesperson told Bristol Live work is due to begin on the new supermarket early in 2021.

They said: "We are pleased to confirm that we have received planning consent for the store on Union Street, as only minor elevation enhancements were required, and we are looking to begin construction on site early in the new year, with a view to opening later next summer.

"We look forward to updating the local community further in the near future."

Since launching in Great Britain in 1994 Lidl now has more than 25,000 employees working across 800 stores in England, Scotland and Wales.

Its city centre outlet will be its thirteenth in Bristol when it opens in 2021.

Speaking about the closure of H&M, a spokesperson for the brand said "the decision to close this particular store was part of the long-term strategy to ensure we are offering our customers the best possible shopping experience in the right locations".
