Lidl named cheapest supermarket for April for fifth month

Budget grocer Lidl has officially been named as the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the fifth month in a row.

The discounted retailer is famed for its low priced products, which means the announcement will come as welcome news to families who are still grappling with rising costs.

A new study from Which? found that the popular discounted supermarket was offering the lowest prices in this months price comparison.

The consumer champion website found that Lidl beat out tough competition to the top spot with a total price of just £25.92 for a basket of 18 items.

Which? compared the prices of of a basket of popular groceries, including Hovis wholemeal bread, unsalted butter and semi-skimmed milk, at the UK's biggest supermarkets to see how they compare.

Lidl manage to pip rival Aldi to the post by 74p, as the discounted supermarket came in at second place with a total of £26.66 for the same basket of items.

Asda was the cheapest of the big six grocers, but was still unable to beat the two discounted supermarkets as it came in third place with a total of £28.46.

The supermarket giant was followed closely by rival Sainsbury's who came in at fourth with a total that was £2.27 more expensive at £30.73.

A basket of everyday essentials cost £30.75 at Ocado, £31.01 at Tesco and £31.19 at Morrisons.

At the opposite end of the scale, premium supermarket Waitrose continues to be the most expensive option with a total of £35.06 - which was £19 more than Lidl's total.

“With household bills and food prices going up, it’s no surprise that budget supermarkets have seen an increase in footfall recently and we’ve found you can buy many of the same groceries for a much better price than at one of the Big 4 supermarkets,” Which? Money expert Reena Sewraz said.

“As well as shopping around, our advice to save on your food shop is to stick to a budget, have a list of what you need and reach for the value ranges to help your money stretch further.”
