Lidl issues urgent product recall amid salmonella contamination alert

Lidl has issued urgent product recall for two products that may be contaminated with salmonella.

The supermarket's British arm has recalled Red Hen Breaded Chicken Nuggets and Red Hen Southern Fried Chicken Pops.

The firm says the step is being taken for shoppers because salmonella contamination has been found in some of the products in the batch.

The pops have a best before date of February 5, 2022, and the pack is 210g.

The nuggets - pack size 450g - have a best before date of February 2022.

The Food Standards Agency warns that symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Lidl said in its recall notice: "If you have bought the above products, we advise you not to eat them."

It added: "Lidl GB wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Point of sale notices have now been displayed in Lidl’s stores.

These aim to explain to customers why the food products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

The Food Standards Agency said in a statement: "If you have bought any of the above products do not consume them.

"Instead, return them to a Lidl GB store for a full refund, with or without a receipt.

"Alternatively, dispose of the product and email customer.services@lidl.co.uk, including photo of the affected product with Best Before Date and Lot Code.

"The team will process this refund via letter."

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be withdrawn or recalled.

The former occurs when a product is removed from the shelves - the latter when people are told to return it.

Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices are sent out by the Food Standards Agency to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

A Food Alert for Action can also be issued.

These alerts provide local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.
