Lidl is recruiting 2,500 more workers during the coronavirus outbreak

Budget supermarket Lidl has unveiled plans to hire 2,500 more workers to help in stores during the coronavirus pandemic.

The company says the new employees will be given four-week contracts in an attempt to keep up with the high demand being seen in its shops across the country as people bulk buy items.

Lidl's bosses said the main duties would be to restock shelves and assist staff and added that they will pay £9.30 an hour for staff outside London, or £10.75 in the capital.

A statement from the company said: "The new hires will be responsible for working together to keep the store clean, tidy and the shelves well stocked so that customers can get the products they need. Shifts could include mornings, evenings and weekends."

Christian Hartnagel, chief executive of Lidl GB, added: "Our store colleagues are doing an incredible job at keeping our shelves stocked, and serving communities during an extremely challenging period."

"Temporarily expanding our teams is one way we can help support our colleagues and customers, whilst providing work to those that have had their employment affected by the current situation."

The Government has advised shoppers to be considerate when filling their trolleys as stocks of certain items such as bread and pasta run low, with supermarkets limiting the amount people can buy.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman said: "There’s plenty of stock available but if people buy more than they need others will be left without."
