Lidl Ireland will be closing early this weekend for the nicest of reasons

Lidl has announced that they will be closing earlier than their usual opening hours on Sunday, and it's not for a reason you might think.

The supermarket giant took to their social media accounts to announced that they will be closing their doors in shops across the country at 8pm instead of their usual time of 9pm.

In an effort to reward their employees who have continued to work throughout the pandemic, providing its customers with the essentials they needed, the company will be holding a national staff recognition event.

In a statement, Lidl said: "Please note that our stores will be closing at **8:00pm** this Sunday 17th October.

“This is to allow us hold a national staff recognition event to say thank you to our amazing teams for their continued hard work!

“We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

People were quick to praise the supermarket for recognising the hard work of their employees.

One shopper said: "Good for you and well deserved. Thank you to all of the lovely staff who still turned up every day during a pandemic to make sure families could still shop. Enjoy your night".

Another said: “Well done to all your staff, they where always courteous and welcoming during all lock downs. They kept the shelves stocked and even though we where all wearing masks you could tell they still had a big smile on their faces. Thank you”.

People continued to express their gratitude to supermarket workers who worked on the front lines throughout the pandemic, with some suggesting that the store should close even earlier.

One customer said: “Close at 6pm and get the party started earlier for them. Great staff especially in Glasnevin.”

Another said: “A little early. You should have closed that Sunday and open later on Monday so staff can celebrate afterwards as well. But well done Lidl.”

Lidl has become the first supermarket in the country to recognise their employees work throughout the pandemic by closing their doors early to reward them.
