Lidl Ireland respond to frustrated customers as special offer gym equipment sells out in minutes

Many Lidl customers were left frustrated after new gym gear sold out at many of the chain's stores within minutes.

The supermarket had brought in kettlebells, dumbells, exercise mats and balls as well as other equipment.

But many frustrated customers learned while queuing outside that the gear was already gone.

Ray Flannery tweeted the company: "At least 50 people in the queue looking to buy fitness equipment in Lidl, 30 of which were looking for rowing machines. That is some amount of sales you would have had this morning. Very frustrating."

While another customer said: "How come your Dumbbells in the special offers Are sold out in all Dublin 15 stores? Five minutes after opening."

Lidl cleared up that these special offers are purchased months in advance and they had no idea there would be such a demand when they were ordered - long before the coronavirus closed gyms.

A spokesperson said on Twitter: "We’re sorry about this. These items were forecast months in advance and due to the current situation demand for home fitness has increased massively as you can imagine."

At the moment there is no immediate plans to bring more of the gym items back onto shelves although they may try bring this special back sooner given the demand.
