Lidl 'investigating' as sold-out trainers appear on eBay for up to £1,000

Lidl are launching an investigation after shoppers complained that its popular trainers have all sold out - only to appear on eBay for a much higher price.

The popular supermarket 's new inexpensive 'Lidl by Lidl' range went viral before it was launched on September 16 and was a huge hit with shoppers.

The trainers for men and women were priced at just £12.99, while the novelty socks are £1.49.

The shoes are branded in the store's signature bold colours and became so popular that they has sold out across all UK stores, with Lidl confirming on Twitter that are no plans to restock.

This is bad news for customers, as the budget priced blue and red trainers have been turning up on auction site eBay - and for a much higher price than they originally sold for.

The Manchester Evening News reports that some sellers have been offering the popular items for prices ranging from £300 - £500.

Some sellers are even asking customers to buy them outright for up to £1,000.

Some shoppers took their complaints directly to Lidl's Twitter account.

One wrote: "Not easy to get the trainers when the staff in my local store are chatting openly about buying 3 or 4 pairs each to sell online."

Another shared a screenshot of the trainers on sale with the words, "How much are they in store!"

Lidl have responded to the complaints by announcing on Twitter that they will be launching an investigation after a number of customers alerted them to the eBay sales of their stock.

A Lidl spokesperson has said: "With regards to items being sold on eBay, we have been made aware and are looking into this."

While Lidl have said that they "are hopeful for their return to stores again in future", no date for a restock of the popular range has been confirmed.
