Lidl forced to melt down all chocolate bunnies following row with Lindt

Budget supermarket chain Lidl has been ordered to melt down all their chocolate bunnies for being "too similar" to those sold by Lindt, a top Swiss court has ruled.

The German grocer's version of the gold foil wrapped bunny made famous by the Swiss chocolatier is to be pulled off shelves immediately, with remaining stock melted down.

Switzerland's highest court has said that the Lindt product - one of their biggest selling lines - should be protected from duplicates, reports WalesOnline.

During the ruling, the Swiss federal court said that the two products were likely to be confused by the public due to their similarities.

Lindt's chocolate bunny has become an iconic bestseller - particularly around Easter - and features the infamous gold foil wrapping, red ribbon and bell. Lidl's Favorina version features the same gold foil wrapping, but with a green ribbon, bow and bell.

The court has confirmed that the supermarket chain will have to melt down the remaining chocolate bunnies and turn them into something else.

This is not the first time that Lindt have headed to court in a bid to protect one of their most iconic and bestselling products, as they previously applied for an approved trademark back in 2001.

That has been upheld more than once in court.

Lidl is not the only discounted supermarket to be taking to court following a row over a branded product, as Aldi and M&S famously battled over their caterpillar cakes last year.

The two retailer's settled their dispute in February this year after the high-street retailer accused Aldi off copying their Colin the Caterpillar cake with their own version.

Neither Lidl or Lindt have commented on the ruling.
