Lidl creates 40 jobs as second East Kilbride store opens its doors

Lidl opened its second East Kilbride store today with the creation of 40 local jobs.

The discount supermarket chain opens its 99th Scottish store on Churchill Avenue on the former Atholl House site -once the home of East Kilbride Development Corporation.

Lidl have one other store in the town, at Hairmyres.

Customers were invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8am and will be offered the chance to sample some of Lidl’s award winning products throughout the day, along with exclusive deals and offers on selected products for the first week of opening.

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion plans in Scotland and has created approximately 40 new full and part time jobs for the local community.

The Churchill Avenue store has a 1,325m² sales area and features facilities such as an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilet, baby changing and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Gordon Rafferty, said: "We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to East Kilbride. It is great for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community."

The news follows Lidl’s announcement last week that it is set to open 12 new stores across Scotland, whilst regenerating eight of its existing stores, over the next three years.
