Lidl block off baby bottles on display in Pontypridd store

Baby bottles have been blocked off at a Lidl store in Pontypridd.

A customer called Martin, 44, who asked for his surname to remain anonymous, shared images of baby items being blocked off at the Lidl store on Thursday afternoon.

While some toys and games could be seen in the aisle items such as bottles and equipment could also be seen closed off to customers.

It comes after the Welsh Government revised its list of what classed as essential items that could be sold in supermarkets as part of the fire-break lockdown rules in place in Wales until November 9.

Baby products including equipment, clothes and nappies were included on that list.

Martin said: "I didn't need baby items, but it annoyed me to see them blocked - blocked off by turning around other special buy items."

The shopper said he didn't see anyone trying to buy the items, but he didn't understand why they were blocked off.

"I asked a staff member and was told they weren't essential," he said.

"That really annoyed me when they tried to place the blame on the Senedd."

Earlier this week an updated list of essential items was released after the cordoning off of certain products led to confusion and outrage among some customers at supermarkets in Wales.

When Martin questioned Lidl about the baby bottles on Twitter, Lidl replied: "Hi Martin, we have to follow the Welsh Government guidelines and we have been instructed not to sell any non-food items.

"This is unfortunately out of our hands."

When asked about the situation on Friday, Lidl said: "Following the update to the guidance from the Welsh Government earlier this week, previously restricted non-essential items, as classified by the Welsh Government, including baby products, can now be purchased where there is an exceptional need.

"These changes were rolled out to our Welsh stores yesterday *Thursday), after the tweet you’re referring to."
