Lidl asks North Tyneside Council for permission to sell alcohol from proposed Shiremoor store

A supermarket giant has asked the council for permission to sell alcohol from a proposed new store.

Lidl announced plans to build a new supermarket in North Tyneside which could create 40 jobs in April.

Proposals have been put together for a store at the corner of New York Road and Park Lane, in Shiremoor.

It held a public consultation, which closed in mid May, asking people to comment on the proposals via a website or a leaflet delivered to homes in the area.

Now, it has asked for permission to sell alcohol every day at the planned store from 7am to 11pm.

A notice on the authority's website stated that members of the public have until September 21 to comment on the plans.

A planning application for the new store also has to be voted on by councillors sitting on the planning committee. As of yet this application hasn't appeared on the authority's website.

The new store is part of the company’s wider £1.3bn investment plans across the country.

When the plans were revealed David Murphy, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: "We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening a new Lidl store in Shiremoor and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce which shoppers across the country have come to love. Our plans are set to create around 40 new positions which would be fantastic for the local community."

Work on another new branch of Lidl near North Tyneside General Hospital on Rake Lane continues apace with that store expected to open its doors this autumn.
