It can be easy to get Aldi and Lidl confused - they're both regarded as the reigning budget supermarket kings, they're both German-owned businesses, and even their names are pretty similar.
For many people, the two chains are pretty much interchangeable, as they expect to find extremely low prices and copycat products at both.
However, is this similar reputation justified? Or is one of the two actually cheaper than the other?

A price comparison carried out by consumer watchdog Which? found that Lidl was the cheapest supermarket in the UK, though the difference - 43p - was very small.
The only way to truly know which of the two is cheaper is to compare the prices of your own weekly shopping baskets - which is exactly what WalesOnline did.
The publication's reporter journeyed to both shops - armed with a shopping list that included items such as bacon, orange squash, and cornflakes - to see which one was really the cheapest supermarket in the UK.
Though the reporter found Aldi "easier to navigate", what ultimately matters is the cost of the shopping, which was as following:
Lidl: Milk (£0.80), pasta (£0.29) , pasta sauce (£0.39), peppers (£0.82) , pizza (£1.69), cornflakes (£0.55), mushrooms (£0.79), easy peelers (£1.19), bananas (£0.77), eggs (£0.79), bacon (£1.39), chicken breasts (£3.35), bread (£0.49), orange squash (£0.89).
Total: £14.20
Aldi: Milk (£0.80), pasta (£0.42), pasta sauce (£0.39), peppers (£1.25), pizza (£1.69), cornflakes (£0.55), mushrooms (£0.75) , easy peelers (£0.69) , bananas (£0.65) , eggs (£0.79), bacon (£1.39), chicken breasts (£3.35), bread (£0.49), orange squash (£0.89).
Total: £14.10

It was found that a total of nine items were priced exactly the same between the two stores, with easy peelers and peppers having the biggest difference in cost.
So, it looks like maybe Aldi deserves the title of the UK budget supermarket champ, though the difference was so small it's not much of a victory - maybe we'll call this one a draw.
