LUCKNOW: If any citizen meets with an accident with garbage transportation vehicles deployed by LMC there is a strong possibility that even after filing a police complaint the accused driver will never get caught. Reason: Most of these vehicles are plying without registration number plates.
In brazen violation of traffic rules, many LMC garbage transportation vehicles plying on the roads have missing number plates or their numbers have got erased over the years. Lucknow Municipal Corporation officials too have turned a blind eye to the issue and it seems are waiting for a mishap as wake-up call.
In a reality check, TOI found many such numberless vehicles in Balaganj, Hazratganj, Gomtinagar, Indiranagar and Thakurganj.
Residents say such vehicles have been moving around for years with no action taken by LMC or even the police.
Indiranagar resident Ajay Singh said, “Two months ago, I was hit by a garbage vehicle as its driver applied sudden brakes. Though my leg got fractured I couldn’t file any complaint as the vehicle was without number plate.”
Geeta Awasthi from Hazratganj said, “Both LMC and police know about this issue but are acting ignorant. Police should understand how will they trace these vehicles if number plates are missing.”
Municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi said directions to print numbers on every vehicle have already been issued. “However, if there are vehicles left, we will ensure that numbers are printed on every vehicle,” he added.
Meanwhile, DCP traffic Subhash C Shakya said that no vehicle is allowed to move without number plates.
“A checking drive will be launched against such vehicles and appropriate action will be taken. We will have to check if there were any challans issued against these vehicles,” he said.
