Libyan parliamentarians started arriving in Cairo on Friday to participate in a meeting under the patronage of National Committee on Libya, said a senior Egyptian source. This falls under efforts exerted by Cairo to unite the parliament.
The military operation launched by the Libyan National Army in Tripoli - since April 4- has led to the split of parliamentarians between pro-war and anti-war.
In a statement, the source added that the delegation representing all political blocs in Libya would convene on Saturday for three days with Egyptian politicians to discuss possible means to exit the current crisis and achieve stability in Libya, while supporting top institutions including the parliament and the LNA.
Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper has published days ago part of the meeting agenda, which aims to consult and bring closer points of view among MPS, said deputy Saleh Hashim Ismail.
During a phone call with the newspaper, Assalheen Abdul Nabi al-Ghaithi said that around 80 deputies – representing all Libyan regions – arrived in Cairo to take part in the meeting for the sake of uniting the parliament.
Ghaithi added that the purpose of this meeting is to deliver a message to the world that Tobruk parliament is the only elected body, therefore no agreements should be signed with another body.
Since May around 60 deputies boycotted the parliament sessions in Tobruk, chaired by Libyan parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh.
The parliament – elected in 2014 – consists of 188 deputies and it exercises its tasks besides the interim government under head Abdullah al-Thani alongside the National Accord government chaired by Fayez al-Sarraj.
Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, said that a delegation requested to visit the league to brief it on the current situation.
