The UN mission to Libya has promoted a new sense of optimism ahead of a House of Representatives session in the eastern city of Tobruk on Monday to vote on a constitutional referendum.

According to the mission, UN Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame accompanied by Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs in Libya Stephanie Williams have met with lawmaker Abdel Salam Nasiyeh.

It said Nasiyeh expressed optimism that the House of Representatives will endorse the referendum law.

The priority for Libya now is for the completion of the constitutional process, unification of institutions and the preparation for elections, he was quoted as saying.

The UN mission’s statement said that the conferees “discussed economic reforms, improving service delivery to the Libyan people, and agreed that the current political and economic situation is unsustainable.”

Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Youth Day, Salame told Libyan youth: “You're right to want to reach an urgent political solution that renders your national institutions functional, and allows them to legislate and implement to resolve the power outages, frozen liquidity, unresolved disagreements, unemployment and other problems that affect you, both as Libyans and especially as youth.”

“Accelerating a legitimate, unified, capable, righteous and fair state is rightful and valid,” he was quoted as saying.

“Express it and we stand by your side... for a better future and for an excellent and bright tomorrow far from the present that you are rightfully discontent with,” he told Libyan youth.
